In December, Milan is a paradise; during this particular time of the year the city is rich with typical recreational opportunities, but also with something more special, unique occasions, that you can only come across for Christmas time. So, not only spectacular lights and glamour decorations, Christmas markets and ice skating, of course. This year, as always, the best singers, soloists, stage directors and conductors will add another memorable page to the history of the theatre La Scala.
Most of Italy's greatest operatic artists, and many of the finest singers from around the world, have appeared at La Scala. The theatre is regarded as one of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world, and for Christmas the magic atmosphere of the city of Milan will be enhanced by “la prima” in this amazing structure.
The current custom of inaugurating the opera season on 7th of December, the day of Sant'Ambrogio, patron saint of Milan, was introduced in 1940 and then it have started permanently from 1951 thanks to Victor de Sabata, the famous composer. That year, Maria Callas, who had made her debut on the Scaliger stage a few months earlier, got her first Milanese triumph singing in “The Sicilian Vespers” directed by De Sabata himself.
The return of Verdi’s “Attila” conducted by Riccardo Chailly will open a great Season with 15 opera titles, 7 ballets, plus 2 guest productions from the Tokyo Ballet, 8 symphonic programs and 7 voice recitals. The calendar is completed by extraordinary concerts.
So…another common Christmas? Not this time.
